Tipu Sultan’ın Kaplanı: İngilizlerin Hindistan’daki Sömürgeciliğine Karşı Tarihsel Bir Sembolizm Örneği

Özet

Bilindiği üzere Hindistan’ın sömürülmesi, malî bakımdan İngiltere’yi süper güç yapmıştır. 18. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Hindistan üzerindeki sömürgecilik mücadelesinde Fransa’yı büyük ölçüde bertaraf eden İngiltere’nin önündeki en önemli engel, Tipu Sultan’ın (hük. 1782-1799) yönetimindeki Meysur Sultanlığı olmuştur. İngiltere ve Meysur arasında yaşanan yaklaşık yarım yüzyıllık mücadelede, psikolojik savaşın her türlü unsuru iki güç tarafından da kullanılmıştır. Bu psikolojik savaşın en ilgi çekici nesnesi, “Tipu Sultan’ın Kaplanı” adıyla bilinen otomattır. Bu çalışmada söz konusu otomat, İngiliz sömürgeciliğine direnişin sembolik bir örneği olması bakımından incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda Hindistan’daki İngiliz varlığının tarihsel arka planı ve Tipu Sultan’ın biyografisi hakkında bilgi verilerek, otomatın üretim amacına ve çalışma ilkelerine ilişkin bir varsayım ortaya konulmuştur.
