For Authors

Writing Rules

Original research articles, translations, and book reviews are published in the Journal of History. These articles are expected to contribute to the field and provide original insights based on the methodology of historical research. Additionally, papers presented at scientific-academic meetings can be accepted, provided they have not been previously published.

  • The language of the Journal of History Studies is primarily Turkish. However, English articles can also be included in the journal.

  • The texts must adhere to the TDK Spelling Guide in terms of language.

  • Pictures, drawings, maps, or documents requested to be included in the articles should be numbered, and a brief description of their content is required.

  • The word count for original articles should be between 3000 and 10000 words, without exceeding the upper limit.

  • Articles should include Turkish and English abstracts, with a word limit of 150-250 words, as well as 5-8 keywords.

  • The entire content of the articles, including any attachments (pictures, drawings, maps, documents, etc.), belongs to the author(s).

  • The Editor/Editorial Board reserves the right to make minor edits and corrections to the articles.

SPELLING RULES

  • Articles should be written in Microsoft Word-compatible software, on A4 size paper, using the Times New Roman font. The following rules should be followed:
  • The title should be in lowercase, regular (normal) font, and 12-point size. The title should be centered. The main and subheadings should be used in the text, and these headings should be numbered. Main headings within the text should be written in lowercase, bold, 10.5-point size, and aligned to the left; subheadings should be written in lowercase, bold, 10.5-point size, and aligned to the left. There should be a 6-point space between headings and paragraphs.
  • The author's name and surname should be written 12 points below the main heading, in regular (normal) font, lowercase, and aligned to the right. Underneath the author's name, the title, university, faculty, department, city/country, email, and ORCID information should be provided in 8.5-point font.
  • The text should be 11-point size and justified. There should be a 2.5 cm margin on the top, bottom, right, and left sides of the paper. The line spacing should be exactly 12 points. There should be a 6-point space between paragraphs, and the paragraphs should be indented with a tab. (For images and attachments within the text, the line spacing should be 1.15 points.)
  • The header-footer section should not contain the author's name and surname on the first page. On subsequent pages, the upper header section should contain the author's name and surname, while the lower header section should contain a shortened version of the article's title, written in lowercase and 11-point font. The author's name should not be included in the first version, and it should be added after the peer review process.
  • Page numbers should be placed in the upper header section, aligned to the right and left, in 8-point font, and should not appear on the first page of the article.
  • Quotations that exceed 5 lines should be indented 1 cm from the paragraph and should be written in a smaller font size without quotation marks. Quotations with fewer than 5 lines should be written in italics within the text. Expressions that need to be emphasized should also be in italics.
  • Tables should be centered on the page. At the top of the table, a centered and bold "Table 1:" heading should be included, with the table description placed immediately next to this heading. Below the table, a centered and bold "Source:" heading should be provided, with the source information indicated next to it. Depending on the length and density of the table content, the font size may need to be reduced; in such cases, it can be adjusted to 10 or 9 points. The table description and source information should align with the general formatting of the text in terms of font style and size.
  • Footnotes should be written in 8.5-point font with full justification and a paragraph indent of 0.5 cm. In articles, citations should be numbered as footnotes at the bottom of the page, starting from 1. No in-text citations should be used. When providing references in footnotes, book and journal names should be in italics, while article titles should be in quotation marks. In footnotes, the full citation should be provided the first time it is mentioned, and afterwards, abbreviations such as “ibid,” “op. cit.,” or “loc. cit.” can be used as determined by the author. If an author's multiple books or articles are used, the author's surname should be followed by the full or abbreviated title of the book or article after the first use. In the case of multiple authors, all authors should be listed the first time and subsequently abbreviated. In footnotes, authors can provide the author's surname followed by the full or abbreviated title of the work or article, without using “ibid” or “op. cit.” abbreviations.


Details and Examples for Source Citation

  1. Article texts submitted to the Journal of Historical Studies should be written using footnotes. Footnotes should be placed end of the sentence point.

 When the same work needs to be cited consecutively in footnotes, abbreviations such as “ibid. (the aforementioned work), can be used. If a single author's multiple books and articles are used in footnotes, the author's last name should be followed by a meaningful abbreviation of the book or article after the first usage.

In footnotes, sources should be listed in the “Name Surname” order, while in the Bibliography section, they should be listed in the “SURNAME, Name” order. Bibliographic information about the book should be provided in the Bibliography section, without repeating the page information.

  1. If a quotation is made from an article, the page or page range where the quotation appears should be provided in the footnote. In the bibliography, information about the article's page range in the journal should be provided.

Plagiarism Policy

The editor generates the similarity report after the article is uploaded to the journal using Turnitin or similar similarity detection programs. Articles submitted to the journal are first scanned as full text. Subsequently, the "Exclude Bibliography" option is applied, and as an additional step, the "Exclude Quoted Material" option may also be used during the scan.

The submission is not considered for preliminary evaluation if the scan reveals a similarity rate exceeding 25% in the entire text. For studies with a similarity rate below 25%, it is carefully checked whether each quoted sentence is properly cited. In cases of citation, unless the quoted source is an archival document or a highly valuable chronicle-like work, authors are generally advised to avoid excessive use of quotations where not necessary. During editorial review, these points are closely examined, and reviewers are also asked to provide their opinions on potential instances of plagiarism. Despite all these reviews, the authors bear full responsibility for any ethical violations.
