On the Information about the Mongols and the Countries Under Their Sovereignty in Roger Bacon's Opus Maius

The Opus Maius (Great Work) written in the 1260’s by Roger Bacon (1214-1292) on of the monst important scientists of medieval Europe, is the most magnificent production of his academic life. In this book that prepared to be presented to Pope Clementis the IVth, Roger Bacon showed that he was a person who was knowledgeable in many scientific fields, from astronomy to mathematics, from chemistry to theology. Undoubtedly with this work Roger Bacon made a significant contribution to the scientific efforts of his own time as well as to the scientific efforts of the following years. One of his contributions was to address the tremendous developments in the field of geography in recent years. The attempts made to establish diplomatic contact with the Mongols after their expedition to Europe in 1241 caused many regions that were previously unknown to Europeans to become known. Roger Bacon not only witnessed these developments, but was also excited to announce them by including them in his work. The main topics he discussed at this time were issues related to the Mongols, the region they lived in and the people under their sovereignty. Undoubtedly the information here was based on a much more important source than his other information about geography. As he clearly stated his work, the information he discussed was based on what his acquintance Willem of Rubruk who had göne to Mongolia, conveyed.
In this study the records regarding the Mongols, the regions under their sovereignty and the people living there will be evaluated in Roger Bacon’s work.
